Music While Reading, Breaking Spines and an Appreciation of Bookmarks // My Reading Habits !

This tag was created by The Book Jazz right here!

I wasn’t tagged, but WHO CARES, RIGHT ?

I love everything centered around reading, and if I see anyone talking about their reading habits, there’s a 99% chance I’ll head over and check it out. So HIT ME UP WITH YO READING LIVES YO 😎 So, here goes nothing !

1. Do you have a certain place at home for reading?

Nah, I read everywhere; bed, kitchen, toilet ( no shame whatsoever πŸ˜‚), on my desk, anywhere. If I don’t need my hands, I’ll use them to hold my book.

2. Bookmark or random piece of paper?

BOOKMARK. Always πŸ’™ I even have an Emergency Bookmark on my bedside just in case I misplaced mine. I might bookmark with the paper I tuck in my book that I use to write my review notes if I lost my bookmark or something. But no Random Paper. And NO DOG EARS. #READBOOKSNOTDOGS

3. Can you just stop reading or do you have to stop after a chapter/ a certain amount of pages?

I rarely stop reading in the middle of a chapter. I hate having to reread to find my exact place, so stopping at the end of the chapter, even if it’s long, is SO much neater.

4. Do you eat or drink while reading?

Nope, not really. (If anything, I sometimes have lemonade. I πŸ’™ lemonade!!) I am a bit paranoid when it comes to eating and reading at the same time. I mean, I could spill it all over the book, get oily hands and ruin the cover, or get to a plot twist just as I’m swallowing and then choke and die. See ? That’s some Final Destination right there. And OH, MY GOD, reading in the bath ? How do people even DO that ? If you’re a bath reader, you have my respects, and much more composure than me πŸ˜‚

5. Multitasking: Music or TV while reading?

Music !! I can’t always have golden silence around, so I put music. It’ll be either a song I’ve listened to enough times not to distract me, or rain. I literally have 12 minutes of rain sounds on my phone JUST for reading. I put it on a loop and I’m set !!

6. One book at a time or several at once?

I mostly read one book at a time. Sometimes I’ll read a new book while rereading another one. Or I’ll read several books while I’m going through a book from A Song of Ice and Fire series by G.R.R Martin ( because if I ever read them alone, there’s at least an 89.56% chance I’ll land in a book slump.)

7. Reading at home or everywhere?

Everywhere ! Well, no everywhere everywhere. Not while chasing a prison escapee. But you get the idea.

8. Reading out loud or silently in your head?

Silently ! I read SO much faster if I do it silently. Plus, if I read out loud all the time, me and Dried Throat will be best buddies, and will probably go on epic adventures with Horribilus Headacheus πŸ˜‚

9. Do you read ahead or even skip pages?

You see, I don’t like reading romance so when it gets too much I’ll probably skip to the actions.

10. Breaking the spine or keeping it like new?

I’d REALLY want to keep my books’ spines like new. But spines are fragile ( SOMEBODY INVENT A SOLUTION ) and they break. So if that happens despite my efforts, it would have been unavoidable ( right ? *paranoΓ―a*

11. Do you write in your books? *GASP* NEVER.

Readabits:

1. When do you find yourself reading?

Morning, afternoon, evening, whenever you get the chance or all the time? Whenever I get the chance !

2. What is your best setting to read in?

If I had to describe the perfect reading setting for me, I’d imagine a big window facing East. A cool weather, sunrise. Birds chirping and a nice breeze. I’d sit by that window in a cozy reading nook next to my bookshelf and I’d read with no disturbances or commitments. *Sigh*

3. What do you do first – Read or Watch?

I’d really rather read first ! If I watch first, I’ll probably DNF the book. It almost happened with The Hunger Games ! I watched the first movie at least 3 times before I knew there was a book. I fell asleep reading the book multiple times because it wasn’t much different and I basically have a mental tattoo of it.

4. What form do you prefer? Audiobook, E-book or physical book?

Physical book all the way !

5. Do you have a unique habit when you read?

I don’t think so, no ( Yup, I find me boring too xD) 6. Do book series have to match? YASS PLEASE. πŸ™ŒπŸ™ŒπŸ™ŒπŸ™Œ

  • How do YOU read ?
  • What’s your ideal setting ?
  • Any habits ?
  • Physical books, audiobooks or ebooks ?
  • Also, paperbacks or hardbacks?

  1. I like bookmarks but mainly because they’re sturdy and practical – if I don’t have one around, I just use paper πŸ˜€
Also I don’t dog-ear books but mostly because I always have some paper on me, I wouldn’t mind it tho if it happened! I’m not very fussy about mistreating my books πŸ˜›
I used to only read one book at a time, but while I’m at uni that’s pretty much impossible! πŸ˜… Uni also taught me how to write in my books aha. I think our reading habits are quite the opposite πŸ˜‚

    1. Yup they are xD Go you, practical bean you are πŸ’™πŸ˜‚ I’m not at Uni yet ( That’ll be next year *scared shudder* ) but today I found myself reading 5 books at the same time πŸ˜‚ The Hound of the Baskervilles, A Clash of Kings, The Bourne Identity, an eARC of a thriller in verse called Mr.Either/Or and the audiobook of Frankenstein as a reread πŸ˜‚ Also Frost Like Night, but I haven’t read a word of it for some time and I’m hesitant to DNF it xD #someonestahpmeplz

      1. Oh cool! Do you know what you’re gonna study?
I hope you’re enjoying those books aha! I’ve read two of the Sherlock Holmes novels so far and quite liked them. x

      2. I’d love to make it to the best uni in my country ( one for engineering, it’s from there that NASA recrutes from where I live, I think ), but I don’t want to get my hopes too high before I see how I do in the tests !
I’m advancing in a decent pace in them, not faster than I expected because Sherlock Holmes being a classic, and A Clash of Kings being what it is πŸ˜‚

  2. I love doing posts where I haven’t been tagged. I actually think I’ve done more tags where I just decided to give the questions a go than ones I’ve been tagged in. I can’t listen to music while reading. I used to be able to, but not anymore, too distracting. I agree about reading silently. It’s so much faster. Although sometimes when a passage is especially lyrical, I might read it aloud. Great answers!

  3. Oh awesome answers, Daan! I wish they could cup up with a solution for weak spines too… Hardcovers are so uncomfortable to read! So maybe find a compromise?
The sound of rain while reading is quite genius. I find that music distracts me too much, unless it’s classical or something, so that would be perfect!
    Lovely post ❀

  4. Cute post, Daan! I don’t usually use any bookmark when reading. I just memorize the page number. But I do have a few bookmarks! My favorite is an ink drawing of Doctor Who (David Tennant, who else?) on a thin sheet of metal. It’s SO COOL. But if I don’t have that around, I just use anything, mostly a receipt or random piece of paper haha. I try so hard not to break my spines. It’s awkward holding the book in an eternal “V” position, but if it helps not to break the spine, then it’s worth it LOL. And who writes in their books. WHO I SAY?????

    1. I’m kind of paranoid about my spines too ! I keep checking it to see if there isn’t that hateful wrinkled line in the spine. And woah, that bookmark sounds SUPER good *^* Why don’t I see people selling those ? The fact that it’s not made of paper makes it good for both big and small

      1. LOL. Same. I rarely lend out my books because I’m afraid my friends will break the spines haha. Paranoid? Yes. Worth it though? Hell yes. Gotta keep them spines fresh. And I actually got the bookmark at Wondercon! So, it’s not a commercially sold product πŸ˜€ More like a special Etsy type of bookmark!

      2. I KNOW RIGHT OMG πŸ˜‚ Etsy is the kind of place to go when you want to be hypnotized and rob yourself of your own money, or if you want to feel like you’re in absolute heartwrenching poverty and everything you own is uglier than a typo on a popular book πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

      3. Etsy had me good and broke last year. I didn’t need to be buying tote bags, pins, and mugs, but did I? YES. Yes I did LOL. I’ve gotten better, but only because I haven’t been on Etsy in months. I’m still recovering, though XD
